For more than 20 years, one man has walked the same bridge in China for one reason: to make sure people in their darkest moments get another chance. His name is Chen Si, known as the Angel of Nanjing. Since 2003, he has patrolled the Yangtze River Bridge, watching closely for people who appear ready to give up, and stepping in before it is too late. The numbers are extraordinary. Chen has helped save at least 469 people, sometimes by physically pulling them back from the edge. He has walked the bridge as many as 10 times a day, wearing a red jacket with a simple message: Cherish life every day. His help does not always end at the bridge. Chen has offered people food, money, a place to stay, and someone willing to listen. He has even helped raise funds for some of those he saved, giving them a chance to rebuild their lives after the moment of crisis passed. He is not a doctor. He is not a trained counselor. He is simply one man who kept showing up.

At least 187 earthquakes shook the Ring of Fire in just seven days. The Ring of Fire curves around the Pacific Ocean in a vast horseshoe. It begins along the western edge of South America and continues north through Central and North America. It then crosses Alaska before sweeping south past Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and New Zealand, covering nearly 25,000 miles, or 40,000 kilometres. Beneath this enormous arc, several tectonic plates collide, separate, or grind past one another. In many places, one plate is slowly forced beneath another. Pressure builds until the ground ruptures in an earthquake, or molten rock rises toward the surface. This constant movement makes the Ring of Fire the most seismically and volcanically active region on Earth. Earthquakes occur there every day, although many are too small or too remote to cause damage. A count of 187 earthquakes sounds dramatic. The total alone does not necessarily mean that a larger earthquake or a volcanic eruption is approaching.

What if you could walk past a surveillance camera and remain unrecognizable to artificial intelligence, while still looking completely normal to other people? That is exactly what Dutch designer Jip van Leeuwenstein set out to achieve. He created a transparent face mask specifically designed to confuse AI-powered facial recognition systems without hiding the wearer’s identity from human observers. At first glance, the mask appears almost invisible. Its clever design subtly alters the geometric relationships between key facial features, eyes, nose, mouth, and jawline, that AI systems rely on to identify individuals. To the human eye, the wearer’s face and expressions remain clearly visible and recognizable. To facial recognition algorithms, however, the facial data becomes distorted and much harder to process accurately. The project was developed as part of the Surveillance Exclusion initiative, which examines the tension between privacy, technology, and the rapid spread of facial recognition in public spaces. Although the mask was first introduced several years ago, it has regained attention as AI surveillance becomes more widespread in airports, smartphones, security systems, and cities worldwide.

How Japanese have produced wood for 700 years, without cutting down trees. Daisugi is an ancient Japanese forestry technique developed in the 14th century originally used by people living in the Kitayama region, because the territory was extremely poor in saplings. They planted cedars pruned in a special way to produce shoots that eventually would become perfect, straight, knot-free lumbers. The shoots are gently pruned by hand every two years leaving only the top boughs, allowing them to grow straight. Harvesting takes 20 years and old 'tree stock' can grow up to a hundred shoots at a time. There was actually another reason why the technique was developed: fashion. In the 14th century, a linear, stylized form of architecture known as sukiya-zukuri (数寄屋造り) became popular, and every prominent samurai or nobleman wanted a house built in this way. There were simply not enough raw materials available to keep up with demand, so daisugi was developed to produce more wood in a shorter time. The wood produced with this technique has also impressive qualities: it's 140% more flexible than standard cedar and 200% denser and stronger. And, it's extremely durable.
