Over the summer, Vicky Ossio wasn't sure whether the 1,200 animals at her Bolivian wildlife sanctuary, Senda Verde, would survive. The sanctuary is situated in one of the areas severely affected by anti-government road blockades that stemmed the flow of fuel and food to the region. Then came the announcement. A recently published study co-authored by National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz announced the discovery of the tilcayo, the first new cat species in 100 years. Initially believed to be another cat species when it was first brought to Senda Verde by a local family, the small, spotted feline was later identified as distinct through genetic analysis. With the help of photographers who brought the unusual feline into the spotlight, support and love poured in from across the globe, and more than $150,000 has been donated to the sanctuary, where the only known tilcayo currently resides. Nogales-Ascarrunz hopes the cat’s international profile will make it easier to find funding for the next step—more science to learn more about the tilcayo and how to protect it. National Geographic photographer @jaimerojo has spent over 20 years photographing monarch butterflies across North America, following their annual migrations from the forests of Mexico to Canada. During that time, he's tried to capture the essence of this chaotic spectacle in his work, including a photo of butterflies in flight that took some 20,000 attempts, which Rojo feels best represents the monarchs’ spirit.
